Calling Subversion Gurus…

general 7 Comments »

Any subversion gurus out there? We have what seems a simple operation but can’t figure out how to perform it. Basically, we want to export files for a specific revision - not the whole repository, just the ones in a revision. If we do a ’show log’ we can see the files we want but (using Subclipse) but how do we export them? - and no, we can’t just walk down the history and pull them out one by one…

Living with Windows Vista UAC

Microsoft No Comments »

One of the first things I did after getting my new Vista laptop was to disable UAC - it just got on my nerves. But after installing SP1 last week i decided it was time to try it out again to see if it had improved as living with it disabled makes Vista no more secure than XP.

So with UAC enabled you frequently see messages like;

UAC Access Denied message

it was at this time I disabled UAC and just got on with the job. But it turns out it’s easy to fix. The trick is to run the DOS prompt as administrator - simple when you know how. From the start menu type cmd and then when the search has refreshed the menu, right click the cmd.exe from the menu and choose ‘Run As Administrator’ and you’ll be fine the next time you issue commands from the prompt.

another Air vs Silverlight post

Microsoft No Comments »

Blogs are beginning to fill with posts about Air vs Flex and a recent Techcrunch prompted this post.

Firstly, let me state I’m neither a Flex or Silverlight developer, I consider myself first and foremost a CF developer and I’m watching the whole Adobe/MS space with anticipation, excitment and caution. I’ve read the recent Silverlight 2 tutorials and i’m excited - Silverlight 1.1 was a beta product (much like Flex 1/1.5), 2.0 looks a much more usable product. One thing that constantly crops us (like the subject of this post) is that Silverlight is not comparable Air - it’s more a Flash competitor. Now, remember I’m not proclaiming to be a Silverlight developer but I can read and i’ve read through all of the Silverlight 2.0 tutorials, after the first 7 it sure seems like a Flash competitor but tutorial 8 moves away from the web and back to the desktop and brings an existing Silverlight app onto the desktop app via Microsoft WPF (with only minor changes to code - hey, it is beta afterall!). Granted it’s not portable (platform) like an AIR app but it leaves me still torn between two camps because on the surface it would seem that Silverlight mostly definitely IS a competitor to AIR - remembering that AIR is the runtime and for the larger parts of the world Microsoft already have a runtime out there, it’s called Windows!

iPhone/iPod 1.1.4 Update just landed…

Installing now, more news later…

edit: 140Mb or thereabouts - which results in….nothing, or at least nothing obvious. No menu changes, no app changes. Nothing. Surely it’s the start of the SDK offering? - but no news on that front from Apple. I’m pretty certain that the SDK is already out with select companies. The BBC have already committed to an iPhone/iPT version of their iPlayer and I imagine that there’s going to be some kind of last.fm client too..that just seems a ripe app for the iPhone.

great couple of weeks coming

What a great couple of weeks we’ve got coming in terms of software releases. Flex 3 and AIR is expected to be released tomorrow, the Apple iPhone SDK was due in February but it may have slipped by a few weeks and Scott Guthrie’s Silverlight 2 Beta1 tutorials sets it up well for an expected public release at Mix08 first week of March.

I was fortunate to get a ‘block’ of 365 jokes, 1 for each day - they’re pretty dire, but i thought I’d add to Friday jollyness, so here goes

Angry man: ‘I’ll teach you to throw stones at my greenhouse.’

Little boy: ‘I wish you would, I keep missing it’…

iPhone + AIR - what if??

Apple 1 Comment »

Something got me thinking this morning - we’re waiting for two pretty major releases both from Apple in the iPhone SDK and Adobe for Flex 3 and AIR - we know the iPhone SDK is going to drop to happen in February, but what if - the iPhone SDK was AIR? Would Apple get into bed with Adobe that much? It would be pretty darn cool - I mean, getting Flash onto the iPhone is almost akin to death and taxes in that it’s going to happen inevitably. Imagine it for Adobe, getting that much instant penetration for AIR from the off, plus the AIR platform provides so much stuff that the iPhone/Apple could benefit from, sandboxing, application installation, updates etc but not forgetting the cross platform benefits….just a thought, nothing more. Thoughts?

EDIT: I know it’s not likely to be AIR…but wouldn’t it have been cool???
