lost my MAC virginity - one iMac on order

Apple 1 Comment »

I’ve been using a Mac mini at work for a few months now mainly for testing purposes and i’ve really been liking the simplicity of it all - plus Leopard looks great….so at the weekend I took the other half to the Apple store and showed her the new iMac and said it would look great on the desk in the office, she agreed - so one iMac 2.4ghz 20″ 2gb 320gb is currently on order. We have an aging laptop from my last place of work and what with getting married next year and who knows what after that it seemed sensible to sort ourselves out with a new bit of hardware.

useless handy hint…removing sticky labels

So we’ll have all spent good money on a product and the good people in the shop have slapped a great big mega sticky label all over the item - it happened to me yesterday! My sister was over yesterday and she said use ‘WD40′ - i laughed and went to grab my can of WD40 from the garage, sprayed some on a cloth and it wiped clean first time. So there ya go - now you know how to get rid of them!

CF7 - Settings, a weird one

ColdFusion 2 Comments »

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this - when you make changes to the CF administrator (eg, enable Whitespace management) it works fine. But then, when you restart the server the setting isn’t persisted? I’ve made sure it’s not a file permissions problem - but even with a fresh reinstall of my CF server and then copying in the backup neo*.xml files to the relevant folder, restarting the service it still does it. I can Any ideas? Apart from not restarting the server?

ditched MS Exchange - hello Google Apps

Since 2004 I’ve been paying the nice folks over at Intermedia.net $30 a month for the pleasure of hosting my email on an Exchange Server - giving me Outlook web access, remote active sync, push email etc. But since I’m getting married next year i need to tighten up on expenditure so last week I flipped over to using Google Apps. It was remarkably simply to implement after signing up for my free account - changing my MX records to delivery to Google servers, adding a few CNAME records for custom start pages, calenders etc - on the whole it’s great and to be honest I’m not missing Exchange since I can get to it from anywhere. I have been investigating various Sync tools to keep contacts/calendar in sync from my SmartPhone - calendar is sorted using oggsync.com but am still looking for a contact sync tool. I used Sharepoint pretty heavily but with GoogleDocs I can achieve most of the same functionality (if not more) but i imagine with the much anticapted ‘GDrive’ that Google have been promising should more than suffice.

More on this as things develop…
