I’ve put off long enough dipping my fingers into the Mach-II pot but recently I’ve been putting aside a little time to familiarise myself with it. I’ve gotten my head round a few of the basics but remembering all the OO terms is sure demanding on my grey matter! More to come soon I hope!
Another useful Windows error message when i tried to start IIS on my laptop - rebooting still produced the same message. A quick Google reveals that Skype interfers with port 80, stopping Skype and the service starts fine. Just a heads up if IIS plays up on you!
Another offering from the Google labs - neat idea, probably gonna cause people privacy concerns (like Gmail never deleting messages originally).
I just upgraded a development server at work and ran into a oddity. In IIS I only have index.cfm listed as the default document. I installed CF7 along side CF6 so it was initially using the default webserver. After it had installed I disconnected CF6 from IIS (Windows 2003 & IIS6) and reconnected it to CF7. Which ever of the virtual domains i visited i got a “Directory Browsing Denied” message. Hmmm…index.cfm exists in the folder, default document at global/site level is set to index.cfm yet it didn’t work. I tried restarting IIS, the server but nothing worked. As a test i added index.htm to the list of default documents, created an index.htm in my site root - hit refresh and there was my site…(index.htm was beneath index.cfm so it did what you’d expect!). I then removed the index.htm reference and restarted IIS and it still worked….very odd - but least it’s working now!
Just listening to the conference call with the senior Adobe/MM figures - turns out 9/11 was the catalyst to bringing the two companies together, deciding that the companies weren’t in direct competion any more and much more complementary products.
Rob Burgess at a recent board meeting said [Adobe and Macromedia] ‘were like twins seperated at birth’.
Current product development will continue as they are currently doing so until the transaction is completed in Fall 2005
Adobe to aquire Macromedia, read more here and here
From the merger FAQ:
What happens to the Macromedia brand?
Adobe recognizes the strong equity of the Macromedia brand. That said, it makes great business sense for a company the size of the combined company to align behind a single corporate brand. Over time, Macromedia products will transition to the Adobe brand. Adobe expects to keep and continue investing in key Macromedia product brands.
At last, my copy has just arrived following delays by Amazon UK. Time to ‘update’ myself with all the new cool stuff in CF7.
Don’t forget tonights online CFUG meeting, Michael Brunt is presenting on ‘SeeFusion’ - it’s a product i’ve heard of but not seen for monitoring a CF server. The session starts at 6pm Eastern time (i’ll be watching the recording in the morning) located in this breeze room.
So it’s all been busy in my world recently, i figured it’s about time to bring you up to date.
Firstly outside of work I’ve been spending a lot of time playing with Farcry and to be honest I amaze myself with it’s capabilties the more I play with it. Granted, it’s not the easiest product to grasp but once your happy with creating your own object types or extending existing ones - writing the odd rule to get the data back out then it really is powerful. I was turned off initially by the lack of documentation (aside from farcry.daemon.com.au) but the openness of the product and tweakability (is that a word?) of the code makes it a serious consideration if you’re looking for a CMS at the moment.
Again, outside of work myself and my other half have just sold her 1 bedroom flat and have bought a 4 bedroom house. At last - no more working on the kitchen surface…not too bad with a laptop but when i’ve got a helicopter in bits it’s a pain in the ass sometimes!
At work we’ve finished the master plan for our new ColdFusion7 infrastructure. My plan for 4 new servers has now grown to 6. Two load balanced CF Enterprise servers (each with 2 instances) for our public sites, two load balanced CF Standard boxes for our intranet and two clustered boxes to run the file share accessing dedicated disks on a SAN. The software upgrades have all been ordered, the hardware too so in a few weeks I’ll be posting back with details on how well the migration went and any glitches along the way.
This morning I spent a while watching Simons Maryland CFUG presentation on CFFORMs (Breezo). I hope more of these happen as it was an excellent presentation, plus being recorded I can watch it back when I want as 6pm Eastern time is kinda late this side of the pond.
