For some reason my site started giving odd error messages tonight, ‘Invalid access to memory location’ and something about deep recursion - messages i can’t explain. Restarting IIS still resulted in the message being displayed, odd thing was that other virtual sites were working fine. I deleted and recreated the site, it would work for a while then i’d test restarting IIS and it would error again…so there was only one solution - ditch IIS!
So i did - under an hour i got rid of IIS and installed the latest Apache and setup all the virtual hosts. I’ve always found the whole config file a little bit of a pain but least the server is working and it seems faster now - maybe Apache should have been tried before now!!!

When I first stepped into the world of Linux, none of it made sense. But over time, I learned to appreciate the text-file based configuration.
Initially, the Apache config file is a little daunting, but it’ll eventually make sense.
I’m glad to see you got it up and running. Next, you should try to move from Windows to Linux
(unless you’re using COM, of course).

I started running Apache on Windows about a year ago and have slowly migrated all of my iis sites to Apache. So let me know if you have any windows specific questions.

John, I think Apache *is* faster. At least that’s been my experience. Yes, the conf file thing is a bit to wade through. It’d be nice if they’d break it up into a few smaller config files. But, you do it a couple times and it begins to get easier (plus it’s free and it has the whole Open Source thing goin’ for it). Welcome to the club.

I’ve had the pleasure of setting up and taking care of a few different servers over the last 2 years, Linux based, Apache+CF 6.1, another was Apache + BD 3.1 and the other was Apache and BD 6.1…
I found it a learning curve to work with the text files, but now, I love httpd.conf. And, I run Apache on my Win XP home laptop to develop small sites.
But, I will say this.. after learning BIND DNS config files, I recently got a small contract which included setting up a Win 2003 box… and man, the GUI DNS server is SOOOO easy!!!

"so there was only one solution - ditch IIS!" - Bravo - now ditch MS for serving all together…
