I finally got Eclipse working on my computer, not sure what i did to get it working but it’s working now - funny thing is, I installed it on a USB Hard drive which moves between my home and work computer. I fired Eclipse up from the disc when i got home and amazingly it was all as i left it when i hibernated my work computer - this could have serious advantages!!!
Or have i discovered something that everyone already knows about???

Welcome to the wonderful world of Eclipse.
All your Eclipse settings are stored within the eclipse directory structure, so you can move it around on disk, or between disks at will without any serious consequences.
As you noticed. This also means that you can put it on a removable drive and move it from machine to machine.
This is how all software should work where feasible IMO.

I think you can do the same with Firefox too…Firefox and Eclipse on a memory stick, on any PC - proably all you ever need!

If only you could do that with CF Server too… Hmm, that makes me wonder.
Anyway, John, do you plan use CFEclipse? I’d recommend it.

I bet a self-contained CF app (i.e BlueDragon/J2EE) would work. John, care to download the Tracking-Tools standalone demo (www.tracking-tools.com) and see if it works?

Yeah, I just migrated to a new laptop and was very gratified by how easily Eclipse migrated all its settings (although I didn’t help matters by moving it from /Applications/eclipse to /home/eclipse - hey, live and learn!).
CF stores all of its settings ‘inside’ so it should migrate easily too. I moved my entire cfmx (jrun) directory to the new laptop and all of my installations moved intact with all their settings.

I tried running a CF app from a USB and it does work!

Another piece of software to drop on a flash drive is cygwin. If you’re a unix nerd or prefer working with bash as opposed to cmd you will find it is pretty awesome.
A quick search on google with the terms portable cygwin should yield the appropriate results. Good luck!
