Yesterday (on Monday) Microsoft released the second release candiate for service pack 2 for XP inching the product closer to it’s release date. I don’t think i recall ever so much work on Microsoft’s part going into any one single service pack as the efforts at Redmond campus are currently going into Sp2 - all part of their ’secure computing’ drive.

The install is a little ‘hairy’ since it requires you to remove previous releases of sp2 before you go ahead and install rc2. I’ve just done it, it took a while but so far despite warnings that certain apps might not work so far I’ve not experienced any problems yet. The prerelease is available from here
